Canmore’s new Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will be a valuable resource for training and education
Canmore residents will have exciting new treatment options this summer when it comes to professional dermatologic skin care in their area. That’s because Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, a new advanced dermatology Centre, will be opening its doors in downtown Canmore, Alberta.
Conceived by Canmore’s very own Royal College accredited dermatologist, Dr. Paul Lubitz, who will own and operate the Centre, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will be a state-of-the-art skin care and treatment facility that will offer a variety of advanced skin diagnostic and treatment services.
But, besides providing for the general and advanced skin care needs of Canmore residents, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, in conjunction with his current general dermatology clinic at the Canmore General Hospital, will serve as prominent resources for patient education and for the training of medical residents pursuing their dermatology training at the University of Calgary. In addition to his thirteen years as a dermatologist and his current role as a staff dermatologist at Canmore General Hospital, Dr. Lubitz is very experienced in training other Dermatologists and Family physicians, as well as medical students and medical residents (a doctor who have completed medical school and is completing further training for example to become a dermatologist). Dr. Lubitz held the position of Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton during the many years that he practiced in Edmonton, and is in the process of becoming Faculty at the University of Calgary in a similar capacity. What that means is that Dr. Lubitz will be able to use his new Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery facility, in addition to his Canmore General Hospital Clinic, as a way to provide additional and more advanced educational and training opportunities to dermatology residents and medical students, our countries future physicians and specialists, in the Bow Valley area.
“I’m very much looking forward to increasing my dermatology teaching responsibilities,” Dr. Lubitz comments. “I’ve always enjoyed sharing my experience and knowledge to further educate medical students, residents and physicians in the exciting and ever-changing field of dermatology, dermasurgery, laser and cosmetic skin surgery. And with the advanced skin care diagnostic and treatment technology that Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will have to offer their patients, the clinic will serve as an excellent training Centre for dermatology residents.”
Importantly, Dr. Lubitz will not be the only knowledgeable resource at his new Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery. As part of its permanent staff, the Centre will also have a fully licensed and certified Laser Technician and Trainer who is experienced in training both technicians and physicians (including dermatologists) in the safe and effective use of a wide variety of currently available, modern lasers. The availability of such an experienced laser technician and trainer, not only will benefit patient care, but also the dermatology residents training at the facility when Dr. Lubitz and the Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery becomes an official training site for University of Calgary dermatology residents (planned for Aug 2014).
Besides serving as a training resource for dermatology residents, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will also fulfill another equally important purpose: the education of its patients. Educating patients has always been an utmost priority for Dr. Lubitz and Art of SKIN’s moderate 1,800 square feet size, and experienced staff will serve perfectly to fulfill the purpose.
“Patient education has always been very important to me, in every dermatology-related position I’ve held,” comments Dr. Lubitz. “And part of the inspiration for opening Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in the Bow Valley was to give myself, and my entire staff, the ideal space to provide the comfortable, intimate, non-threatening diagnostic and treatment environment that our patients want and deserve.”
Continuing on, Dr. Lubitz then mentions just how important skin condition and treatment education is, especially for those who live in the Bow Valley.
“Our community is situated at a high elevation and with that comes a higher UV level,” says Dr. Lubitz. “Skin cancer, therefore, is a very real concern and the prevalence of skin cancer in the valley is very high. I’ve found that educating my patients and providing information to my patients on their condition and the treatments available helps empower them. It helps my patients take a more proactive role regarding their skin’s health and the prevention of skin cancer, rather than only a reactive role once a diagnosis of a skin cancer, such as Basal Cell Carcinoma or Melanoma for example, is made. That’s big; patient education is crucial. That type of patient education is something I look forward to further promoting and developing at Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery.”
