Dr. Paul Lubitz’s New Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Centre Brings Advanced Treatment Options for Skin Cancer Patients
Beginning this summer, residents of Canmore and the Bow Valley will have access to a brand-new resource for receiving all types of advanced skin care diagnostic and treatment services. That’s because a new advanced dermatology Centre will be opening in downtown Canmore called Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery. This state of the art facility will be owned and operated by Canmore’s Dr. Paul Lubitz, a Canadian and American Board Certified Dermatologist who is currently practicing at Canmore General Hospital. Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will offer a full range of dermatologic services, including medical, surgical, cosmetic, and advanced laser treatments. In addition, Art of Skin’s staff will include a certified Skin Care Product Consultant, a licensed and certified Laser Technician and Trainer and a Cosmetic Procedure Consultant. This very experienced staff will help patients of the clinic become much more educated in terms of not only knowing what products and procedures are available, but what are the benefits and risks of such products and procedures, and which product and procedures would best be considered to address a patient’s individual and particular concerns. This empowering information in turn will help patients be able to make more informed decisions about any medical, surgical, laser or cosmetic skin procedures they wish to have; whether to be done now, that they might be considering for the future, or that they are simply interested in learning more about.
“I’ve always put a very high priority on patient knowledge and education,” states Dr. Lubitz. “In conceiving the idea of the Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Centre, I wanted to make sure that the clinic serves as a valuable information resource for my patients so that they can have the opportunity to learn more about proper skin care, and the type of skin products and procedures they choose to use, to pursue or are considering for the future. There’s nothing worse than an uninformed patient. That’s why I made sure Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery employs valuable resource personnel such as an experienced Skin Care Product Consultant and a Cosmetic Procedure Consultant.”
However, in addition to serving as a knowledge resource for a host of medical, surgical, laser and cosmetic services and procedures, Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will also place a particular emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of skin cancer. The diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancer and skin cancer lesions has always been and will continue to be an important component of the professional dermatologic services that Dr. Lubitz provides.
Dr. Lubitz explains the emphasis on skin cancer treatment and diagnosis: “I mention this very frequently, and I’ll continue to do so in the future because it’s important for residents of the Bow Valley to know: “With the increased altitude in the Valley and with the area’s high UV penetration, combined with the outdoors lifestyle of the Valley residents, occurrences of skin cancer in the Bow Valley are more frequent than what I have experienced working in a number of other Canadian centres. Interestingly, I had a conversation recently with a dermatologist from Denver which is another city situated at a high elevation and with a similar outdoors lifestyle to Canmore and Banff. They also report a higher than average skin cancer incidence. That’s why I always urge my patients to protect themselves from the sun, and why Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will place a special emphasis on skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”
Speaking about skin cancer prevention, Dr. Lubitz adds that his new Centre will treat precancerous actinic keratosis (a lesion that can develop into a squamous cell carcinoma type skin cancer), in addition to other precancerous lesions, using a wide variety of advanced treatment modalities including immunomodulators (Effudex, Aldara, Picato), Photodynamic therapy, TCA chemical peeling, and CO2 laser resurfacing, as well as the more traditional electrodessication and curettage, electrofulguration and cryotherapy treatments.
Skin cancer treatments at the Centre will include the surgical removal of cancer, as well as the removal of abnormal moles and dermal and subcutaneous tumors. Topical immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced or non-resectable skin cancers may also be offered in certain situations. Given the importance Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery will place on skin cancer diagnosis and treatments, the clinic will work closely with the Tom Baker Skin Cancer Clinic in Calgary to determine the most appropriate treatment for more advanced cases of cancer, particularly those cases involving aggressive malignant melanomas.
Dr. Lubitz finishes with one final remark, “More than half the battle against skin cancer is patient education and awareness, skin surveillance and early diagnosis. I truly hope that the opening of Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, which will function in a complementary capacity to my current general dermatology clinic at the Canmore General Hospital, will provide a valuable, additional resource and help to further improve skin cancer awareness and early detection in Canmore and the Bow Valley area. That will continue to be a major goal of mine as a Royal College accredited Dermatologist who specializes in skin cancer prevention, detection and treatment”
