How do Stretch Marks Occur?
Stretch marks, or striae, are very common. While the skin is a remarkable organ that is designed to stretch, if growth or weight gain occurs too rapidly, the skin will intrinsically weaken, a partial tear of sorts, and heal, leaving behind the scars we call stretch marks. Many women get them during pregnancy when the skin grows very quickly. Stretch marks can also occur in rapidly-growing adolescents.
Stretch marks are often red or purplish in colour when they first form, but in time they will fade to a white or silvery colour. They can be slightly indented or atrophic, lacking the support structure or integrity of normal skin.
Stretch marks cannot be completely removed, but it is possible to significantly improve their appearance. At Art of SKIN Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, we use a combination of the Elite MPX 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser and the Elite IPL, the Palomar Icon IPL, the Cynergy PDL and 1064 nm Nd:Yag lasers and the Smartskin Co2 lasers as well as Microneedling to improve the appearance of stretch marks.
